I have a Master's in Psych, not a PhD because I could not get past the third unit in the hypothetically user-friendly Personalized System of Instruction Statistics course. I could not learn statistics because I couldn't understand the equations. The gentle teacher and his grad assistant kept saying to me: "You don't have to understand the equations, just plug in the numbers." They knew to have a box of kleenex there for me when I managed to drag myself into the class.
There is a brilliant school of therapy and thought called Neurolinguistic Programming. One of their basic principles is that each of us has a brain different from all other brains, though there are some skilled in verbal, some in math, some in spatial, some in kinaesthetic. There's an old sci fi show from the late 1990s that I still love to watch, not for all the effects, and cool explosions but because the characters (some of them not even actual people) were three dimensional with backstories and baggage that had consequences. The plot was one thing but ultimately, you cared about the characters.

Great reminder for the writers out there.Eva Porterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14855603175280772481noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7153414249560751405.post-84047950830000952162011-09-03T17:37:29.992-07:002011-09-03T17:37:29.992-07:00Thank you for such a great post. I don't normally post responses but I just had to thank you for writing The Writing Warrior. I found it this summer at Borders, I will miss the store too, and I have to say that your influence has done me so much good. I was published in 2002 by a non credible publisher and the result nearly forced me to give up on writing completely. I managed to get back in the saddle and have been at the craft along with reading and studying and all the rest for a few years now.
I have found that writing is in my blood, though sometimes more like a virus than joy, but still it is something I cannot give up. While reading the Writing Warrior I deceded to write my memoirs and the purging which has been done is soul cleansing. I still have those days, but at least now I know where I belong and where I find the most joy.

Thank-you ever so much!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05336380691144668567noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7153414249560751405.post-63948996613984593402011-08-03T19:51:54.709-07:002011-08-03T19:51:54.709-07:00I love the new space, the walk at night...I used t...I love the new space, the walk at night...I used to take night walks, night eyes, in the Sierras, especially in the snow, full moon, and yes the Milky Way etched on inner eyelids all night long...happy birth day, JOY...
